Type 2 diabetes is a lifelong disease that usually begins with insulin resistance, a condition in which the cells of the body don’t use insulin properly. Insulin lets blood sugar, or glucose, enter the body’s cells to be used for energy, so when insulin is unable to do its job, sugar builds up in the blood, damaging nerves and blood vessels and leading to complications, such as heart disease, end-stage kidney disease, stroke, blindness, and amputation. Family history, age and being overweight are strong risk factors for type 2 diabetes. And though nothing can be done about the first two, research has demonstrated that people can prevent or delay developing the disease by losing weight.
